City Hall of Paris
The City Hall is closely linked to the history of Paris. The first City Hall was built in 1357 by Etienne Marcel, the leader of the merchants. It symbolized theacquired municipal freedoms against the rule of King Charles V. During the 16th century, King François I rebuilt the Town Hall in a Renaissance style. During the 19th century, it has been used twice as a refuge for the republicans who proclaimed there the French Second and Third Republic in 1848 and 1870, after the fall of King Louis Philippe and Napoleon III. But the defeat of Napoleon led to rebellion against the republican authorities. Parisians invaded the City Hall and on March 28, 1871, and the Commune of Paris was proclaimed. Repression was extremely hard. The insurrectionists set the City Hall on fire. It has been rebuilt to its identical façade from the years 1873-1882.
City of Paris, The Digital city
(Paris Ville Numerique)
Paris, one of the leading ICT cities in the world, disposes of a unique network in terms of coverage and the number of Internet providers offering high speed connections. Universal Internet service will be offered for free to the Parisians by 2008 –this also includes WiFi for a 100% coverage in the near future. Several hundreds of companies working in the ICT sector are located in Paris and its neighbouring departments. The ICT sector alone generated more than 300,000 jobs in the region. As regards the social dimension, the City of Paris benefits from an important network of associations deeply rooted in the life of the city’s districts. They support the efforts of the municipality by providing access to ICT for those who don’t have access elsewhere. Paris also possesses a strong potential of technological projects emanating from high level universities (“Grandes Ecolesâ€) and a large number of internationally recognized research institutes. The programme “Paris Technopole†supports young and innovative companies. Some key figures showing the significance of the ICT cluster in Paris : First research centre in fundamental mathematics in France (1,000 researchers located in the heart of the city ; 13,550 students ; 92,000 employees) ; business incubators for start-ups ; more than 8,500 companies operating in the ICT sector ; headquarters of major leading international companies. The three main areas of excellence are telecommunications, the production of multimedia content, software and IT services.
GLOBAL FORUM/SHAPING THE FUTURE
Global Forum / Shaping the Future is an annual, invitation-only, not-for-profit international event dedicated to shaping the future of the Information Society through the ideas and visions of industry and government leaders working in the field. Each year, the “Global Forum / Shaping the Future†brings together the diverse expertise of more than 300 distinguished delegates from countries around the world. After 14 years of forging deep ties among participants, Global Forum is today much more than just an ICT conference. It is a significant event on the calendar of some of the most important people in industry, civil society and government During the two-day meeting, we will focus on ways in which the digital convergence of platforms and channels can develop a multimedia and knowledge society and explore issues such as business applications, development of e-communities and successful public-private partnerships. The Global Forum 2006 will highlight a number of innovative projects from around the world in order to strengthen networking on a global basis and foster new international initiatives. The Global Forum has been awarded once again with the Good Practice Event, an European Label.
